Zero Waste Effort
Zero Waste Effort
I am just a normal girl who wants to do her part in reducing my rubbish
So here are ways that I do in my best capacity without being too much:
- Remember to say no straw please. Sometimes i forget to say ‘no straw please’. I feel like writing on my arms ‘No Straw Please’ just so that i can remember to say that.
- Recently i had my period, and I decided to test out menstrual cup, and to my delight, I actually kinda like it. So using menstrual cup, really help to reduce the pads going to landfill. Looking forward to keep using menstrual cup. I have no ‘pad rash’ from wearing pads and its like freeeeeedom! I forget that my period is here...hah! So yea!
- Bring water bottle everywhere i go. I have a Starbucks tumbler that I got as a present from my students, so i bring it everywhere and ask to refill and its great!
- Bring a bag for just in case ‘I need to get something’
- Started a compost bin, my food waste is thrown into my compost bin and they go back to the earth and now i got very fertile soil and no green fingers, but i grow wheatgrass for my cat to eat so that’s great.
- Recycle to my best ability, I don’t usually buy can food but if i do, i rinse out the can and keep it and bring it to IPC recycling centre.
Every effort helps, and I truly believe that if everyone do just a little part, the world will be that much better!
However there is still a lot of waste that I do create and here are some of them:
- Plastic cling wrap for the organic vegetable that i buy from Jaya Grocer, unfortunately the organic section in Jaya Grocer is very heavily wrapped in plastic and I try to reduce my plastic, but this is incredibly unsuccessful. I do buy organic products because i believe in properly nurturing my body and buying organic products also help the environment by allowing the farmers to reduce their pesticides and herbicides usage and in a way, make farming more sustainable. But i really wish that i can get organic products plastic free. I am thinking of going to TTDI Sunday Markets cos there is some organic vegetables there for sale, however its kinda out of my way. But one day!
- Cat food. Win Win and Ah Bo eats dry and wet food, for dry food, i do buy food that is made from proper food where i can actually pronounce the ingredients, but they come in plastic so i buy the biggest pack i can get so that it still produce lesser waste. Feeding my cats the best food i can afford saves me lots of vet money in the future and my cats are very healthy and at a great weight. Wet food consist of can food and ciao churu, can food can be recycled, but ciao churu comes in like plastic aluminium kind of packaging so that’s thrown to landfill.
- Online shopping packaging! I do buy stuff online and the packaging are seriously full of plastics and I do try to reduce my purchases, however sometimes due the savings in terms of money, i do still shop online.
- Food Deliveries: GrabFood. I don’t usually use GrabFood on normal days but recently in December, i did use it a few times, and i feel bad with the amount of plastics/packaging used.
Thank you for reading and please share with me any zero-waste tips that I can incorporate into my life! Or if you know where I can get organic vegetables or sustainable farmers, I would love to support them!
